# The best DOCX editor SDKs for web apps

Eight embeddable Word editors for web apps – compared on features, licensing and price

By Artur Sapek. Published 2026-10-25. Updated 2026-10-25.

A DOCX editor SDK lets users open, edit, and save Word documents inside your web application. Choosing one means balancing Word compatibility with the feature set, frameworks, and licensing model that's best for your product. Other things to consider are server-side editing, real-time collaboration, and agent integration. This guide compares eight options on all these dimensions.

## Licensing and price

Compare the license for your production application, not just the editor core. Open-source packages may depend on paid extensions or proprietary engines, and self-hosted editors still need infrastructure.

Sort byOriginal orderProduction price — best first

| SDK | Production price | Free production use |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Revise SDK](#revise) | $6,000 a year per application, or $2,000 a quarter | Personal noncommercial apps and accredited schools |

| [Syncfusion DOCX Editor](#syncfusion) | $1,199 per developer a year, including 10,000 end users or documents | Community License: under $1M annual revenue, at most 5 developers and 10 employees, and no more than $3M in outside capital ever received |
| [Tiptap](#tiptap) | From $49 a month billed annually. Tracked changes and the AI Toolkit are priced by sales. | The MIT core editor, without the Pro extensions |
| [TX Text Control](#txtextcontrol) | $4,198 per developer, including 2 production servers | None published |
| [Apryse WebViewer DOCX Editor](#apryse) | Quote only. The pricing page mentions $1,500 entry pricing without a unit or term. | None published |
| [Nutrient Document Authoring](#nutrient) | Quote only | None published |
| [ONLYOFFICE Docs](#onlyoffice) | Developer edition by quote, starting from 250 connections | Community Edition under AGPL-3.0, with ONLYOFFICE attribution in the UI |

Table 3: Price dots rate transparency and freedom to scale, not affordability. Green: published per-application or per-experience pricing. Yellow: per-developer, per-seat, per-user or usage limits, or separately quoted features. White: production pricing requires a quote. Free-use eligibility and license restrictions are listed separately.

## The SDKs, in alphabetical order

### Apryse WebViewer DOCX Editor: Word editing next to PDF tools

[Apryse WebViewer DOCX Editor](https://apryse.com/capabilities/docx-editor) adds Word editing to WebViewer, its PDF and document SDK. The DOCX editor runs in the browser through WebAssembly and stores tracked changes as Word revisions, with APIs to list, accept, and reject them. It fits products that need Word editing alongside PDF viewing and annotation.

The DOCX add-on is licensed separately, with pricing by quote. Apryse documents no real-time DOCX co-editing or mobile browser support. Its comparison page lists automatic page numbers and tables of contents as unsupported.

### Nutrient Document Authoring: client-side editing in any framework

[Nutrient Document Authoring](https://www.nutrient.io/sdk/document-authoring/) is a page-based WebAssembly editor that mounts on any DOM element and also runs headless in Node.js. It supports client-side DOCX import, PDF/A export, and tracked changes with reviewer roles. An optional AI package proposes edits as tracked changes.

Nutrient stores documents in its own JSON format and describes DOCX import and export as best effort. It fits browser authoring across frameworks, but Word round trips need careful evaluation. Nutrient advertises real-time collaboration, but the guides we reviewed do not describe how to integrate co-editing. Pricing is by quote, with DOCX support and Node.js use separately entitled.

### ONLYOFFICE Docs: a full office suite you host

[ONLYOFFICE Docs](https://www.onlyoffice.com/for-developers) embeds a complete office suite in an iframe, including documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and forms. Built-in co-editing, comments, and document comparison make it a strong candidate when users need a shared office environment inside your app.

You must operate and scale a Docs server. Community Edition uses AGPL-3.0, while the commercial Developer edition is sold by quote. Review automation from your own code requires the paid Automation API. Choose it when the breadth of the suite justifies a separate document server and iframe integration.

### Revise SDK: React apps with Word round trips and AI agents

[Revise SDK](https://revise.io/sdk) is a React word processor that opens and exports DOCX in the browser. It supports pages, sections, footnotes, comments, and Word tracked changes. JSON-schema document tools let AI models propose text and formatting edits as tracked changes. Co-editing uses a Yjs provider you operate.

Revise fits React apps that exchange Word files and need agent editing. It also exports PDF, HTML, and Markdown. The editor is React only and has no screen reader support yet. Commercial production use requires a paid license.

### SuperDoc: DOCX editing across JavaScript, React, Vue, and servers

[SuperDoc](https://www.superdoc.dev/) edits DOCX in the browser with OOXML as its source of truth. It supports JavaScript and React, with Vue bindings, and offers a document API through Node.js, Python, a CLI, and MCP. Word tracked changes and comments round trip, and co-editing uses Yjs.

SuperDoc fits teams that need DOCX editing across frameworks and server workflows. Browser export is DOCX only. Version 2 pairs an AGPL package with a proprietary engine, introduces breaking API changes, and requires collaboration-room migrations. Review both licenses and the migration guide before adopting it.

### Syncfusion DOCX Editor: broad framework support and small-company pricing

[Syncfusion DOCX Editor](https://www.syncfusion.com/docx-editor-sdk) provides a Word-style editor for JavaScript, React, Angular, Vue, Blazor, and ASP.NET. It includes tracked changes, comments, form fields, content controls, and mail merge. Its Community License can cover qualifying small companies, and it publishes an accessibility support table.

Editing and DOCX export run in the browser, but opening DOCX requires a server-side conversion service. PDF export also needs a server unless pages are exported as images. Its documentation lists unsupported Word features, including equations and line numbers. It fits teams that can host the conversion service and want a broader component suite.

### Tiptap: custom rich text editors with Word import

[Tiptap](https://tiptap.dev/) is a headless ProseMirror editor with an MIT core, extensive extensions, and control over the interface and document schema. Collaboration can run on your own Yjs server. Paid Word features include tracked-change export and DOCX comment round trips. Importing Word comments as live threads requires the Team plan.

Tiptap fits custom web editors where Word is an import and export format. DOCX import uses its cloud unless you have Enterprise on-premises access. Its conversion matrix lists page size and margins as unsupported on import, and sections as unsupported in the editor and on export. Pages is in beta, and tracked changes and the AI Toolkit are separately priced add-ons.

### TX Text Control: .NET teams that also generate documents

[TX Text Control](https://www.textcontrol.com/product/tx-text-control-dotnet-server/) combines a web word processor with server-side document generation on ASP.NET Core. React, Angular, JavaScript, and Blazor front ends connect to the backend. It supports Word-compatible tracked changes and comments, PDF import, and PDF/A and PDF/UA export.

It fits .NET teams that need editing and document generation from one toolkit. The backend runs layout and synchronization, so it needs capacity for active editing sessions. Real-time collaboration is an alpha preview and the AI toolkit is in beta. Prices are published, with developer and runtime licensing to account for.

## How to evaluate Word round-trip fidelity

Opening a DOCX file is only the first check. For a Word workflow, evaluate what survives after editing and exporting it. Use a copy of a representative document and check these three things.

1. Untouched content. Open and export without edits. Compare sections, headers, footnotes, numbering, comments, and existing tracked changes in Word.
2. Edited content. Change a paragraph, a list, and a table, then export. Check both the changes and the surrounding formatting in Word.
3. Review and layout. Add a comment and a tracked change. Check authorship and accept/reject behavior in Word, then inspect page breaks and headers with the same fonts installed.

A feature checklist cannot establish fidelity for your files. Keep these checks separate from deployment requirements, including the services needed for import, export, co-editing, and AI.

## Which DOCX editor SDK should you choose?

For React apps that exchange Word files and need AI editing, shortlist Revise and SuperDoc. SuperDoc also covers other frameworks and server workflows. Choose ONLYOFFICE when you need a full office suite and can operate a document server.

Apryse fits products combining PDF and Word tools. Nutrient suits client-side authoring across frameworks, while Tiptap suits custom rich text editors. Syncfusion offers broad framework support and a Community License for qualifying companies. TX Text Control fits .NET teams that also generate documents.

Before committing, check the production license and run your own Word files through import, editing, and export. The best fit depends on the document features your users need to preserve.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a DOCX editor SDK?

A DOCX editor SDK is a component or library that lets a web app open, edit, and save Microsoft Word documents inside its own interface, usually with page layout, tracked changes, and comments, instead of sending users to Word or Google Docs.

### Which DOCX editor SDKs run without a server?

Apryse's DOCX Editor, Nutrient Document Authoring, Revise, and SuperDoc open and save .docx in the browser. Syncfusion needs a server to open .docx files, Tiptap's .docx import uses its cloud service unless you run it on-premises, and ONLYOFFICE and TX Text Control run their editors from a server.

### Is there a free DOCX editor SDK?

ONLYOFFICE Docs Community Edition is open source under AGPL-3.0, SuperDoc's package is AGPL-3.0 over a proprietary engine, and Tiptap's core is MIT but its Word features are paid. Syncfusion offers a free Community License to companies meeting its revenue, team-size, and funding limits. Revise is free for evaluation, personal noncommercial apps, and accredited schools.

### Which DOCX editor SDKs support real-time collaboration?

ONLYOFFICE, Revise, SuperDoc, Syncfusion, and Tiptap document released real-time co-editing. TX Text Control's is in alpha. Nutrient advertises real-time collaboration, but the guides we reviewed do not explain co-editing integration. Apryse says its DOCX Editor does not support it.

### Which DOCX editor SDKs work with React?

All eight can be used in a React app. Revise is React only, SuperDoc, Syncfusion, ONLYOFFICE, TX Text Control, and Tiptap publish React packages, and Apryse and Nutrient mount on a DOM element with React examples.

### Which DOCX editor SDKs have AI features?

Revise, SuperDoc, Nutrient, and Tiptap provide tools that let an AI model read and edit documents, with Tiptap's AI Toolkit sold as an add-on in beta. ONLYOFFICE has end-user AI tools with your own keys, TX Text Control has a beta toolkit for local models, and Syncfusion and Apryse document samples or APIs for building AI features rather than built-in AI.
