Can ChatGPT proofread a document?
Yes. Paste your text or upload a file, ask ChatGPT to proofread it, and it returns corrected text. On the Free plan it runs GPT-5.6 Luna, and uploads are limited to three files a day. In May 2026, OpenAI replaced canvas in GPT-5.5 Instant and Thinking with writing blocks, which revise a selection or the whole draft with undo and redo. Inside Word, ChatGPT for Word is available on every plan, subject to each plan’s usage limits.
A corrected copy of the whole text makes it hard to see what changed, so ask for a list of changes or compare the result with your original. A chat model can also change wording you intended to keep, so say that you want corrections only.
How accurate is AI proofreading?
ErrataBench, our proofreading benchmark, seeds 487 realistic errors into 98,842 words of English text across 11 documents, including literature, legal writing, and technical manuals, and measures how many each model fixes. It ran 133 model and reasoning-setting combinations through the same prompt, tools, and 2,000-word chunks. Scores average successful runs across the documents, and an AI judge grades fixes that don’t match the expected correction exactly.

Across these seven configurations, 3.5% to 8.0% of seeded errors were left unfixed, and wrong attempted fixes accounted for 0.4% to 2.6% of them. These configurations corrected most seeded errors in this English-language test, but their changes still need review. The benchmark doesn’t measure unrequested rewording elsewhere in the text. How to proofread with AI without losing your voice
- Ask for corrections only: spelling, grammar, punctuation, and clear errors. Say not to rewrite sentences that are already correct.
- Work in sections on long documents. ErrataBench ran every model on 2,000-word chunks.
- Get the changes as tracked changes or a list, so you review each one instead of rereading the whole text.
- Check names, numbers, and quotations yourself. A wrong fix in a fact is worse than a typo.
- Keep the original until you have reviewed every change.
How this proofreader works

The AI agent reads the whole document and proposes corrections as tracked changes: added text in green, removed text in red. It is instructed to make only local, clear improvements and to leave correct passages alone. Suggested text corrections stay pending until you accept them, and you can accept or reject them one at a time or all at once.
