Gemini in Google Docs: plans, limits, and models
Which Google plans include it, how to use it, how much use you get, and what Google says about the model behind it
Gemini shows up in Google Docs as an “Ask Gemini” side panel and as writing and editing tools in the document. Whether you can use it depends on your Google plan, and the details are spread across Google’s plan pages and help center.
I have spent the past year building a word processor that runs Gemini, GPT, Claude, and Grok models, so I follow how each vendor packages its AI. Google’s plans, prices, and features below were checked against its own pages on October 4, 2026.
Is Gemini in Google Docs free?
Not on a standard free Google account. Google’s Docs help says the feature “requires an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan.” A free personal account gets a few Gemini features in Gmail at no charge in the US (Help me write, AI overviews of email threads, and suggested replies), but none in Docs. Google’s feature comparison lists the Docs features under these plans:
| Plan | Price | Gemini in Docs |
|---|---|---|
| Free Google account | $0 | No |
| Google AI Plus | From $4.99/mo | No (Gemini in Gmail and Vids) |
| Google AI Pro | $19.99/mo or $199.99/yr | Yes, 500 uses a month across Google apps |
| Google AI Ultra | From $99.99/mo | Yes |
| Workspace Business Starter | $7/user/mo | No |
| Workspace Business Standard | $14/user/mo | Yes |
| Workspace Business Plus | $22/user/mo | Yes |
There are two other routes. Google offers eligible US college students a 12-month AI Pro trial, with verification and a payment method on file, after which it becomes a paid membership. Personal accounts can also apply to Workspace Experiments, a trusted tester program that includes some Docs features and has its own terms. Google does not promise admission.
To try AI edits on a Google Doc outside of Docs, paste it below or import it as a .docx. It opens as a separate document in Revise. One request with GPT-6 Luna needs no account, and other model families need a paid Revise plan.
How to use Gemini in Google Docs
On an eligible account, Google’s steps for the side panel are:
- Open a document in Google Docs on a computer.
- At the top right, click Ask Gemini. If the document has text, the panel opens with a summary of it.
- Choose a suggested prompt or write your own, for example “List the decisions and open questions in this document.”
- Review the answer and click Insert to place it in the document.
The side panel can also draw on files in Drive, email in Gmail, and the web when you ask it to, and you can add files as sources with “@”.
If you don’t see Ask Gemini, check that you are signed in to the account that has the plan, and on a work or school account, that your admin has turned on Gemini features.
Editing with Gemini in the document
Google documents more editing tools, but which ones you have depends on the feature. Its overview labels “Write and edit” as a Gemini Beta and Workspace Experiments feature, while its editing guide describes it for eligible plans more broadly. The guide describes prompting changes to a selection or to the whole document, refining text with options such as rephrase, shorten, elaborate, and more formal or casual, and changing formatting from a prompt. Edits appear as suggestions you accept one at a time, or with Accept all or Reject all. Google does not say whether these are the same as the suggestions in Docs’ Suggesting mode. Matching the writing style of another document is labeled as a Workspace Experiments feature.
Which model Gemini in Docs uses
The Google Docs documentation we checked does not identify the current model behind Gemini in Docs, and it does not describe a model selector. When the side panel launched in June 2024, Google said it used Gemini 1.5 Pro. That announcement does not establish which model Docs uses now.
The Gemini app at gemini.google.com documents model selection, and the models you can pick depend on your plan (see the October 2026 changes below).
Usage limits for Gemini in Docs
On Google AI Pro, Google allows 500 uses a month across Gemini in Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Meet, Vids, and Pics. This allowance is separate from the Gemini app’s limits, and Google says it can’t be shared between people. Using a feature such as Help me write counts, and so does accepting a suggestion Gemini offers on its own. Suggestions you ignore do not count. The limit resets on the first of the month and does not roll over. When you reach it, Gemini stops taking prompts and stops offering suggestions until the reset.
Google does not publish a number for AI Ultra, which it describes as having the highest limits in Google apps. On Workspace business plans, Google lists limits feature by feature. For example, matching a writing style or document format in Docs is typically limited to five uses a month.
The October 2026 changes to the Gemini app
Google has announced changes to model access in the Gemini app for personal accounts. They start taking effect on October 9, 2026, for users without an AI subscription, and AI Plus subscribers get an email saying when the change applies to them. After the change, Google lists these models by plan:
| Plan | Models in the Gemini app |
|---|---|
| No AI plan | Flash-Lite |
| Google AI Plus | Flash-Lite and Flash |
| Google AI Pro and Ultra | Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro |
The announcement covers the Gemini app. It does not mention Gemini in Docs or the other Workspace apps.
Is Google AI Pro worth it for Google Docs?
AI Pro is the cheapest personal plan with Gemini in Docs. It also includes 5 TB of storage, higher limits and a 1M-token context window in the Gemini app, and Gemini in Gmail and Sheets, and the plan can be shared with up to five other people. If Docs is the only part you need, weigh the price against the value of having AI inside your existing documents, keeping in mind that the 500 monthly uses are shared across the listed Google apps.
| Your situation | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Your work account is on Business Standard or higher | Gemini in Docs is already included. Check with your admin before paying for a personal plan. |
| You use Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Drive storage heavily | AI Pro covers all of them in one plan. |
| You want to choose which Gemini model you use | The Gemini app documents model selection. The Docs documentation does not. |
| You want to use non-Google models such as GPT or Claude | AI Pro does not include them. You would use those vendors' apps or an editor that offers them. |
| You only need occasional help with one document | The free Gemini app, or another free tool, may be enough. |
Other ways to use AI on a Google Doc
You can also use AI on a Google Doc outside of Docs. One difference to know first: Google describes specific data protections for Gemini inside Workspace on an AI plan, while content you share with a separate AI app follows that app’s policies. These options work without a Google AI plan, subject to each app’s usage limits:
- The Gemini app. You can paste text or upload a document on the free plan, and Gemini can export a response to Google Docs. You move the results into your document yourself. Google’s rollout starting October 9, 2026, limits personal accounts without an AI plan to Flash-Lite.
- ChatGPT or Claude. Both have free plans where you can paste your text, and ChatGPT’s free plan allows up to three file uploads a day, with lower limits possible at busy times, so you can upload a .docx downloaded from Google Docs. You bring the edited text back to Docs yourself.
- Revise. A browser document editor where you paste a Google Doc or import it as a .docx. Its agent proposes text and formatting edits as suggestions you accept or reject, on GPT, Claude, Gemini, or Grok models. The free plan runs GPT-6 Luna with a daily AI limit, and paid plans have a monthly limit. It is a separate editor, so you move the document back when you are done.
The bottom line
Outside of trials and Workspace Experiments, Gemini in Google Docs needs a paid plan, and for personal accounts the cheapest is Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month with 500 uses a month across Google’s apps. It makes the most sense if you would also use the plan’s storage and its Gemini features elsewhere.
