The best Microsoft Word alternatives in 2026

A comparison of eight word processors on price, how they handle .docx files, and what their built-in AI can do

Artur Sapek, Founder of Revise··10 min read·

Word is the main reference for the .docx format, so leaving it can feel risky. People still look for alternatives for practical reasons. Desktop Word comes with a Microsoft 365 plan such as Personal, some people want open-source or self-hosted software, and some want an AI that shows its edits as tracked changes. In our own test, Copilot in Word changed the text directly and marked it with a blue highlight and an undo button.

I have spent the past year building Revise, a word processor that opens and saves Word files, so I pay close attention to how each of these handles a real .docx. Prices and plans come from each vendor’s own pages, which are linked in the sources at the end.

Microsoft Word alternatives at a glance

All eight offer a free way to edit documents, and they differ most in the “AI capabilities” column.

All eight open and save Word files, but they describe that support in different ways. Some work in the native format, some import and export it, and some make a vendor compatibility claim. They also differ on offline use and where they run.

How we evaluated them

We used Word as the baseline, because it has native .docx, full page layout, tracked changes and comments, and Copilot on Microsoft 365 plans. We compared each alternative on five points:

  1. Word files: whether it opens and saves .docx, and what the vendor documents about keeping sections, headers and footers, footnotes, numbering, tracked changes, and comments.
  2. Built-in AI: what it can do, and whether you can review each change before you keep it.
  3. Collaboration: whether other people can edit the same document, and how.
  4. Price: what one person pays, compared with Microsoft 365 Personal.
  5. Platforms and control: where it runs, and whether it is open source or can be self-hosted.

The order is our editorial judgment, and it gives the most weight to Word file handling and AI editing. It is based on each vendor’s documentation, listed prices, and our separate hands-on test of Revise, Copilot, and Gemini. We did not run the same Word file through all eight. If price or privacy matters more to you, use the fit table further down instead of the order of the list.

Where this post refers to our own test, it means our AI document review test, which ran several of these tools on the same contract in August 2026.

The 8 best Microsoft Word alternatives

1. Revise: Best for Word files with reviewable AI

  • Free plan: Yes, daily AI limit
  • Paid from: $8/mo
  • Built-in AI: Revise Agent

Revise is a separate word processor that runs in the browser and opens and saves .docx. It preserves the Word features it documents, including section layouts, headers and footers, footnotes, and numbering. On export, for files up to 25 MB, the parts you did not edit are written back from the stored original. Larger files, and any export Revise cannot verify, are rebuilt from the Revise document, and features that Revise keeps without showing may be missing from that rebuilt file.

Word tracked changes and comments import as suggestions and comment threads and export back to Word. Its AI agent proposes text and formatting edits as tracked changes that you accept or reject, while header, footer, and page layout changes apply immediately. The free plan runs GPT-6 Luna, and paid plans add Claude, Gemini, Grok, and larger GPT models.

Pick it if your documents go back and forth with Word users and you want AI edits you can review. Skip it if you need to edit Word style definitions or charts, because Revise does not let you change them and normally writes the originals back on export, or if you want a desktop app.

2. Google Docs: Best for browser collaboration

  • Free plan: Yes, with a Google account
  • Paid from: $7/mo
  • Built-in AI: Gemini

Google Docs is free with a Google account and runs in any browser. It has real-time co-editing, comments, suggestions, and version history, and it edits .docx files directly as well as importing and exporting them. Workspace plans for businesses start at $7 per user per month on an annual plan.

Gemini in Docs is not on the free plan or Business Starter. It starts with Business Standard ($14 per user per month) or, for individuals, Google AI Pro ($19.99 per month). In our AI document review test, Gemini needed some nudging, but it left comments and made edits as Docs suggestions. The comments appeared under the user’s own name. For more options in this category, see our Google Docs alternatives guide.

Pick it if you mostly write with other people and want everyone to work from a shared link. Skip it if you want Gemini in Docs without paying for a qualifying Google AI or Workspace plan.

3. LibreOffice Writer: Best free desktop replacement

  • Free plan: Free and open source
  • Paid from: Free
  • Built-in AI: None

LibreOffice Writer is free, open-source (MPL 2.0) desktop software for Windows, Mac, and Linux, and it doesn’t need an account. Its user guide says Writer opens Word files (.doc and .docx) and saves to Word formats.

The current release, 26.8, contains no generative AI features and does not send documents to remote services, according to its release notes. Optional extensions can connect a local model through Ollama or LM Studio.

Pick it if you want a free, private desktop word processor. Skip it if you want AI built in.

4. OnlyOffice: Best for self-hosting

  • Free plan: Yes, desktop, self-hosted, and cloud
  • Paid from: $20/mo
  • Built-in AI: AI plugin (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, local models)

OnlyOffice is an open-source suite whose editors work in Microsoft’s OOXML formats natively. The vendor claims 100% view, conversion, and print fidelity, and its document editor supports tracked changes and real-time or paragraph-locking co-editing. The desktop editors are free on Windows, Mac, and Linux, and there are also mobile apps.

Teams can run the free Docs Community edition on their own server or use the free DocSpace Startup cloud plan. DocSpace Business is $20 per admin per month as a limited-time offer (normally $30). Its AI plugin connects to a provider you choose, such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, or a local model through Ollama. It can generate, rewrite, summarize, and translate text, and an inline agent can edit and format the document, with broader agent features depending on edition and setup.

Pick it if documents must stay on your own infrastructure. Skip it if you want AI that works without setting up a provider.

5. Zoho Writer: Best free online editor

  • Free plan: Yes, editing is free
  • Paid from: Free
  • Built-in AI: Zia

Zoho Writer is an online word processor that is free for document editing, and it has apps for Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android. It supports real-time co-editing and imports and exports .docx. Zoho’s paid plans are WorkDrive team plans. Document automation (merge, fillable forms, and e-signature collection) comes with a monthly allowance of free credits, and extra credits are paid.

Its assistant, Zia, can draft, rewrite, summarize, and proofread, working on selected content or the whole document. It runs on Zoho’s own model or your OpenAI key.

Pick it if you want a full online editor at no cost. Skip it if you want AI edits you accept or reject one at a time, which Zoho does not document for Zia.

6. Apple Pages: Best for Apple devices

  • Free plan: Yes, on Apple devices
  • Paid from: $12.99/mo
  • Built-in AI: Apple Intelligence Writing Tools

Pages is free on Mac, iPhone, and iPad, and on the web through iCloud. It imports and edits Word files and exports to Word, EPUB, RTF, plain text, and PDF. Real-time collaboration works for up to 100 people, and collaborators on Windows can join through iCloud.com.

On devices that support Apple Intelligence, Writing Tools can proofread, rewrite, summarize, and compose text. An optional Apple Creator Studio subscription adds premium templates and image tools.

Pick it if you and your collaborators use Apple devices. Skip it if collaborators need a native Windows or Android app rather than iCloud.com.

7. WPS Office: Best low-cost suite with AI

  • Free plan: Yes, WPS Standard
  • Paid from: $5.83/mo
  • Built-in AI: WPS AI

WPS Office is a desktop and mobile suite for Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android. The vendor describes it as fully compatible with Microsoft Office formats. The free Standard edition includes basic PDF tools and 1 GB of cloud storage.

WPS Pro+ is $69.99 a year (priced for PC and Android) and is listed as ad-free. It includes WPS AI with a daily limit, which covers spell check, rewriting, summaries, content generation, and chat with a PDF.

Pick it if you want a desktop suite with AI for less than Microsoft 365. Skip it if you want an open-source suite.

8. SoftMaker FreeOffice: Best free suite for business use

  • Free plan: Yes, also for business
  • Paid from: $4.99/mo
  • Built-in AI: None

FreeOffice is free for personal and business use on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android. Its word processor, TextMaker, opens and saves .doc and .docx and supports master pages, sections, footnotes, and PDF export.

FreeOffice does not advertise built-in AI. SoftMaker’s paid suite, Office NX Universal, is $4.99 a month and adds ChatGPT writing, rewriting, and summarizing, plus DeepL and LanguageTool.

Pick it if you need a free desktop suite that a business can use. Skip it if you want AI without paying.

Which alternative fits your job?

It helps to start with the reason you are leaving Word. If the files still have to go back to Word users, the alternatives that document their Word handling in detail matter most. If you just want to stop paying, the free desktop suites provide core word processing without a subscription.

What Microsoft Word still does best

  • Native format. .docx is Word’s own format, so there is less risk of problems from conversion. In our review test, Word handled the test file and exported it with its formatting intact.
  • Review tools everywhere. Track Changes works in Word on the desktop, the web, iPhone, and iPad (Microsoft support).
  • AI already included. Microsoft 365 Personal includes Copilot in Word, and Family includes it for the subscription owner. Both have usage limits.
  • Wide platform support. Word runs on the web, Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android, and Word for the web is free with a Microsoft account.

If you receive Word files only occasionally, the free Word for the web may be all you need alongside another editor.

What each alternative costs

For comparison, Microsoft 365 Personal is $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year and includes the Word desktop apps and Copilot with usage limits. Word for the web is free.

The plan column lists each tool's paid plan or add-on, which is not always a cheaper tier of the same product. These are not like-for-like, because some add AI or templates and OnlyOffice's cloud plan is priced per admin. US dollars before tax.

How to switch from Word

  1. Save old files as .docx. Some editors, including Revise, do not open the older .doc format.
  2. Test your hardest document first. Use the one with section breaks, numbered clauses, footnotes, and tracked changes.
  3. Check the tricky parts. Open the converted file and look at the page breaks, headers and footers, and numbered lists.
  4. Send one file back to a Word user and ask them to open it before you move everything.

The bottom line

The best way to choose is to think about where your documents go next. If they stay with you or your team, a free option may be enough, depending on your collaboration, layout, and AI needs. If they go back to Word users, test your hardest file in the alternative first.

If you are staying in Word and only want a different AI, see Copilot for Word alternatives.
